Darryl Do has a concealed carry license, rare even among gun owners in the city who usually have to be content with a premises or target shooting permit.
While any New Yorker with a clean record and no history of mental health issues can apply for a premise or target permit, a concealed carry permit requires the applicant to submit a Letter of Necessity to be evaluated by the NYPD licensing officer. The licensing guidelines aren't without controversy, and are often criticized for discriminating against lower-income residents who lack the financial means to successfully apply for any type of firearm permit.
While running his family business, a perfume warehouse in the Bronx, Darryl often has to carry large amounts of cash with him, which prompted Darryl to apply for a concealed carry permit. Darry recounts an incident when he drew his sidearm at work:
"It was summer, our door was open ... all of a sudden i hear "hey, stop that guy, he robbed a cab," so I pulled out my handgun, told him to stop, freeze, get on the floor, so then we grabbed him, and there happened to be a cop up the block, and, we called him in."
The handgun Darryl used that day was what he calls his "thirty-eight," a .38 Special 5-shot Smith & Wesson snub-nosed revolver, loaded with +P cartridges. Darryl also owns a .380 Walther PPK and a 9mm Glock 19, but his thirty-eight is his weapon of choice when it comes to self-defense.
"You never know, from one minute to the next," said Darryl.

ReplyDeleteThat's a good anecdote. But it raises several questions, all of which would add value: why did Darryl need a concealed carry license? How much harder is it to get than a regular license? Where on his person does he carry the pistol? (And is he left-handed or right-handed--I want to know, so I can picture the pistol and holster.) Why does he prefer the Smith & Wesson .38 over the other two?
Also, back to the anecdote: what had the bad guy done, that he needed to be stopped? If a source leaves out a crucial piece of the story, you need to follow up and ask the question!
